About Myself
My name is Stephen Marshall ,a  husband and father of 6 children.
I am  Mi'kmaq and reside on the Millbrook First Nations near Truro Nova Scotia ,Canada. I have been hunting, fishing and camping in the backwoods  for most of my life.

For many years I have been reconnecting  or reintroducing our youth and young adults in our community with  Native and modern living skills in a wilderness setting here in Nova Scotia,Canada. Our first and still on going project which started in  September,2001,  Millbrook First Nation's Youth Moose Harvest.
Millbrook  Fisheries  Director, Adrian Gloade ,myself and many volunteers take 6-10 kids in small groups  of 2-3 kids/volunteer and spend 4 days in a remote location in Cape Breton Highlands and immerse the kids into the  moose harvest experience. They get to take part in camp setup, scouting, calling and harvesting this animal that is so important to our Mi'kmaq people.
The final process is to distribute the meat to the elders in our community along with a community feast which open to all.
Along with this ,my role also  to instruct wilderness survival skill, navigation skills, camp etiquette and respect for the land and animals we use.

Since the launch of Moose Camp,I came to realize how much I had enjoyed being apart of such a unique learning experience . In 2002 I completed the Province of Nova Scotia Registered professionals Guide course then decided to sharpen my wilderness survival skills and enrolled in a intense 30 day wilderness survival camp in New Hampshire,USA called Jack Mountian Bushcraft. These 4 weeks of eating bugs and plants taught me how  how to stay alive comfortably for extended periods of time in any wilderness situation.
With this knowledge and passion, I founded Backwood Adventures to introduce others in the same style of learning and  wilderness experiences.

The Mi'kmaq people have been long known as the  people of the forest and have many wilderness skills and knowledge of remote living & travel.I have combined modern and traditional skills together to make a memorable outdoor experience.

Being a self employed Registered Hunting & Fishing guide here in Nova Scotia,I have had the privilege of getting to know and enjoy the few remote and untouched locations of this area.Cape Breton Highland is my favorite place to camp and explore.
